club history

The Sage Brush Rifle and Pistol Club built, and maintains two silhouette ranges in north central South
Dakota. The club's smallbore silhouette range is located six miles north of Timber Lake, SD while the
newest, high power/black powder cartridge silhouette range is located 18 miles west of Mobridge, SD.
The original location of the smallbore range was near Glencross, SD in 1984. This range was moved because
of maintenance issues and speculated improvements in wind reduction. However, those southeast winds
continue to be a challenge. The range currently has trees on the north and west sides, and we have added a
10 x 50 foot mobile home that we use as a clubhouse. The range consists of 80 targets with 8 firing points
and was the site of the South Dakota State Smallbore Championships in 2003, 2004,
2005, 2006 and 2007.
The high power/ black powder range was made possible by a group of 28 charter members. These visionaries
put up the necessary funds to purchase the first set of targets and as always, there was the single, very
energetic member who spent a lot of time welding everything together. Of course, there were and continues
to be those core members who can be counted on to answer the call of duty when holes have to be dug and
concrete has to be poured.
improvements and development plans
The club continues to make improvements to the facilities through the efforts of the membership and through a grant from the NRA Foundation. In 2006 an additional 40 silhouette targets added to better facilitate the lever action, high power and plack powder matches. At the end of the 2007 season a covered shelter was added to the High Power and Black Powder and Long Range/Silhouette range near Mobridge. Early in the year the long range "coyote" target was moved to a new location making it more visible. Near the end of the 2007 season the "sight-in" targets for the rams, turkeys and pigs were lowered to better facilitate sighting-in. Funding for a new gravel road into the silhouette range was approved at the 2008 annual meeting and hoped to be completed early in the year.
The Smallbore Range near Timber Lake saw a much-needed upgrade with the construction of an 80' concrete firing line.
Long-range plans call for the construction of a second "sight-in" target for each of the silhouette targets and the addition of wind flags on the range. With a little luck and a lot of work these two changes might even happen in 2008.
Sage Brush Rifle & Pistol Club works hard to accommodate local groups who wish to use their range(s). One is the local 4-H club.

High Power, Black Powder Cartridge Rifle-
The newest high power/black powder cartridge silhouette range has developed rapidly over the past
five
years. The first set of 40 targets were ordered in November of 2003. In April of 2004, feet were welded
on each of the targets and the rails were installed on the grounds. The first silhouette high power and
black powder cartridge rifle matches were held in June of 2004. In 2005,
an additional 40 silhouette targets were purchased and stands were
constructed to facilitate lever action rifle matches.
Black Powder Cartridge Rifle Championship-
These facilities were also used in September of 2005 for what is
believed to be the first South Dakota State Black Powder Cartridge Rifle
Championship match. The club also sponsored the South Dakota State High
Power Championship in 2004, 2005, 2006 and 2007 at this range.
Long Range Matches-
During 2005, members were busy designing and
constructing targets for Long Range Black Powder Cartridge “Gong or
Buffalo” competition. The targets for these
matches will include a “bucket” to be shot offhand at 247 yards, the remaining targets to be shot from
cross sticks will include a “coyote” at 376 yards, a target fondly referred to as a “hostile” at
approximately 589 yards, an “elk” at 765 yards, a “buffalo” at 900 yards and a
"circle" at 1,000
yards. Seven shots will be fired at each target for a total of 42 rounds
in a match.
600 Yard IBS-
In 2008 members will also be erecting a single 600 yard international Bench Rest Shooters target.
This type of shooting event requires one to shoot four groups of five
shots for record. A full match consists of Light and Heavy rifles.

available facilities
One of the highlights of each of the matches is the fine dining of homemade dishes provided by the local ladies who really know how to cook. At the present time the only other modern convenience is a common outdoor restroom. At the present time there is no electricity or running water on either of the ranges.
